SIMON CAME INTO the kitchen. He crowded her near the stove. “I couldn’t stop thinking about our…conversation. The more I thought about it, the more compelling I found it.”
“Our conversation on corporal punishment?” she clarified. She didn’t know anything about that topic. What could Violet have possibly said on the subject that he found it so compelling that he needed to come to her house to discuss it?
“I brought a book you might find interesting,” he said and handed her a slim volume, In Defense of Flogging. “I thought we could discuss its central thesis.”
She hurriedly scanned the back cover. “You came to my house to talk about whether criminals should be flogged rather than incarcerated?”
Was it her imagination, or had he moved a step closer. “Definitely.”
“I don’t have an opinion,” she said.
“I was hoping you’d say that.” He tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, and the gentle caress felt so much better than it should.
She backed away from him, moving several steps, until she bumped her hip against the counter.
“It gives us so much more to explore,” he said. “Which punishment is better?”
“What do you mean?”
“We can experiment.”
“Experiment?” She had no idea what he was talking about. What kind of experiment? She wasn’t sure she wanted to know. She turned her back on him and started to pull plates from the cabinet behind her.
“My thoughts are criminal when it comes to you,” he said.
What had Violet done?
Her earlier daydream came back to her full force, Simon touching her, Simon making her scream.
